 Challenge!
« Thread Started on Jul 20, 2005, 9:17pm »

Here is a challenge for you! :)
What I want you to do is to get this story and complete this first chapter. You may change some of the original contents if you want, but you may not change the names of the characters and places, or change the story line. ;D

Raphean looked down upon the village of Shanof from high atop the Wish Tree. The villagers swarmed about trying to complete their daily duties. Lately the mountain village had not been faring so well.
*
It all had started four weeks ago, when suddenly all of the fields and streams dried up and the herd animals died, even the game had disappeared. The people of Shanof had to live off the stores, and they were starting to run low. The people blamed Siharogg, the bear god, for their suffering.
Raphean, a tall and fair skinned 16 year old boy, thought this was just a stupid excuse to have someone to blame, for he himself did not believe in the Great Bear, though he dared not tell his elders this for fear of being cast into the Lonely Forest.
*
At the moment Raphean was at the Wish Tree. He wished like mad that soon everything would be back to normal. He had been coming up to the Wish Tree nearly every day for a week now, always wishing for the same thing.
Just as he was climbing back down the tree’s thick leafy braches he heard his name being called. He turned his head. The voice belonged to his little brother, Ralz.
‘Raphean, Raphean. Mama says you have to come home now! It’s getting dark!’
‘I’m coming, I’m coming!’ said Raphean, reluctantly.
*
Back at home Raphean was greeted by the sight of very small lumps on plates at the table. He sat down.
‘What’s this? It doesn’t look like any food I’ve ever seen.’ asked Raphean.
‘Its bread,’ said his mother ‘and don’t complain it’s all we have left.’
Raphean opened his mouth in shock.
‘You mean the stores are empty already? How are we going to eat?’
Just as his mother opened her mouth to reply a great chiming ran through their wooden hut.
‘No time to answer questions now, we have to get to the Great Hall!’
*
The Great Hall was located right in the centre of Shanof. The rest of the village seemed to be built around it. The Great Hall was only used for feasts and village meetings, and seeing as they had little food they were definitely not going for a feast.
*

‘Greetings, Norrada.’ Said Bahnn, the chief’s advisor, graciously. ‘I see your boys are strong and healthy. Good, good. Just take your seats.’
Raphean’s mother eyed Bahnn curiously. He was usually very grumpy and never spoke to anyone lesser than himself unless he really had to.
Raphean and his family sat down at their usual places and looked to the front. At the front of the Great Hall there was a long bench at which the heads of the village were seated.
*
Sakdoa II, the Chief of Shanof, sat in middle of the bench staring around the peoples heads. On either side of him sat Theonox, the village shaman, and an empty chair in which Bahnn was meant to be seated. Suddenly the Chief stood up and everyone went quiet except two young boys seated near the back.
‘Stand up!’ shouted the Chief. The boys immediately stopped talking and sprung to their feet.
‘Get up here now!’
The two boys ran as fast they could towards the front bench.
‘Now out!’ cried the chief. ‘I shall not have rascals like you in my hall. Out!’ The boys ran out of the hall like frightened chickens.
‘I shall like to talk to those two boys’ parents before they leave the hall tonight.’
*
The Chief straitened himself up and had a sip of some weird liquid out of his drinking bowl.
‘Hem, hem.’ He started. ‘People of Shanof, I have called this meeting to talk about the seriousness of our situation. As you all of coarse know, our food stock is nearly depleted.
‘Therefore we must send a, a messenger to go to Siharogg Mountain and complain to the Great Bear about our situation.’
*
The people of Shanof gasped.
‘But no-one has been to Siharogg Mountain for years.’ said a man in the audience. ‘The journey is too perilous.’

‘That is why we must choose one of the fit and healthy, not to mention brave, young men of our clan to do it.’ answered the Chief.
‘My son, Dehno, could be the messenger.’ cried Eayan, the local armourer. ‘He is as strong as an Ox!’
Suddenly another man in the crowd rose.
‘Your son might be as strong as an Ox, Eayan,’ he said, ‘but he is as dim-witted as a rock.’
Eayan’s face went redder than blood.
‘My son, on the other hand,’ continued the man, ‘is faster than a mountain lion and as smart as a Spirit from the Lonely forest.’

Another man, named Jonah, laughed.
‘You aren’t talking about your son are you, Mannk?’ laughed Jonah.
‘Why wouldn’t I be?’ retaliated Mannk.
‘The Chief said brave and your son is the most cowardly person I know, Mannk.’

The winner shall recieve a sig thingy! ;D
Have fun! ;D
